A new provincial innovation hub aims to bring science and technology closer to communities while helping local researchers and innovators turn their ideas into practical solutions.

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) has inaugurated the Marinduque Innovation Hub (iHub) in Boac as part of its efforts to strengthen the province's science, technology, and innovation ecosystem.

The launch took place during Innovation Fest 2026, led by DOST Secretary Renato Solidum Jr. at the Marinduque Provincial Capitol on November 4, 2026.

The facility is designed to support innovation, technology development, and commercialization, creating opportunities for local researchers, entrepreneurs, institutions, and government agencies to work together on solutions for community needs.

Bringing Innovation Closer to Communities

Beyond providing a space for innovation activities, the hub is intended to help connect locally developed technologies with potential users and adopters.

This approach is particularly important for provinces where research and technology initiatives can address practical challenges in agriculture, environmental protection, public services, and livelihood development.

By strengthening collaboration between DOST, local government units (LGUs), and other stakeholders, the initiative aims to create pathways for research-based solutions to reach communities.

Five Technology Projects Awarded to Local Governments

During the event, five technology projects were also awarded to local government units, highlighting how science and innovation can be applied to different local priorities.

These include:

  • SAFEWTRS – A technology initiative focused on improving access to safe drinking water.
  • Coral Nursery Units – A project supporting coral reef rehabilitation in coastal communities.
  • BoaKonek – A centralized digital reporting platform and command center dashboard.
  • Palatak Palay Seeder – An agricultural technology designed to support rice production.
  • Solar-Powered Hydrothermal Dehydrator – A technology for agricultural processing and livelihood development.

The projects demonstrate how technology can support both environmental and economic needs, from water access and marine conservation to agriculture and digital public services.

Building a Stronger Provincial Innovation Ecosystem

The establishment of the Marinduque Innovation Hub reflects a broader effort to make innovation more accessible beyond major urban centers.

For local innovators and entrepreneurs, access to research facilities, technical support, and partnerships can help turn promising ideas into solutions that can be tested, improved, and eventually adopted.

With the new hub and technology projects, Marinduque is taking steps toward building a more connected innovation ecosystem—one where science and technology can contribute directly to local development.

The initiative also highlights the role of provincial governments and research institutions in making Filipino innovation more responsive to the needs of communities.
